01The Challenge
An established B2B services company was running a decade-old monolithic application on oversized dedicated servers. Deployments took days, required out-of-hours work, and regularly caused outages. Infrastructure costs kept climbing while reliability got worse. The internal team knew the architecture needed modernising but couldn't take the application offline — customers depended on it around the clock.
02What We Built
We re-architected the monolith into containerised services running on AWS EKS, with every piece of infrastructure defined in Terraform. The migration used the strangler pattern: new services were carved off the monolith one at a time, each running in parallel with the legacy code until verified, then traffic was switched over gradually. Auto-scaling replaced the permanently oversized servers, and a full CI/CD pipeline replaced the manual deployment process.
03How We Delivered It
The migration ran over four months in carefully sequenced phases. We started with a complete dependency audit, then migrated the lowest-risk services first to prove the process. Each phase had an explicit rollback plan that was tested before cutover. The final phase — moving the core transactional workload — completed with zero customer-facing downtime, verified by synthetic monitoring running throughout.
04The Outcome
Infrastructure costs dropped 60% — auto-scaling means the company now pays for the capacity it uses rather than the peak it might need. Deployments went from a multi-day manual process to a 15-minute automated pipeline that runs multiple times per week. The full project cost was recovered within the first quarter after migration through infrastructure savings alone.
